June 28, 09: Qualicum SUP Race

2009 Qualicum Beach Stand Up Paddleboard RaceThe second attempt at the 1st Annual SUP race finally took off with flying colours and style. Sunday, June 28, 2009 saw twenty three racers and a decent crowd of spectators enlighten the Qualicum Beach seawall for the event. The main focus of the race was on “FUN” and that was most definitely achieved. Although once again the wind was a challenge, every participant completed the race with a smile.

Stu Robinson of Comox - in his bright yellow jersey - took his second victory in as many races in the Men’s category, and will be a tough guy to beat in the future. In second place of the Men’s category was Dave Collins from Mexico, and following closely in third place was Olivier Bluzat from Victoria.

In the Groms (ages 10-17) Riley Richters from Lantzville won, followed by Carston Matlo (Victoria) in second place and in third place was Johnny Grove, also from Victoria.

The Boomers +45 easily kept up in the Men’s heat; Mike Matlo finished third overall and first in his category and the local man himself, Colin Kearns, finished in second.

The Women’s race was filled with excitement; there were more women than expected and it was a battle all the way to the finish for second (Holly Lefevre of Bowser) and third place (Yvette Macarthur of Nanaimo). Taking the Gold was Elysia Dempsey from Victoria, killing each stride on her 10 footer (the shortest board in the competition).

It was great to see the beach covered in paddle boards. There is so much to learn in such a new sport and the perfect strategy is on everyone’s mind. So keep it up! The first race is out of the way; practice hard and we’ll see you next year!

Thank you to everyone involved,

Scott “Scobar” Barbour
